The Story Behind This Recipe

Fish tacos are a fresh Mexican coastal dish: seasoned white fish in corn tortillas with avocado and a refreshing sauce.

We replaced the soured cream with Greek yogurt, keeping them light and high in protein.

Preparation Steps

  1. Season the fish

Combine all the spices, brush the fish fillets with olive oil, then rub with the spice mixture. The dry rub gives the fish a flavoured crust.

  2. Cook the fish

Grill the fish or pan-fry in a skillet for a few minutes per side until cooked through and it flakes with a fork (63°C internal temperature), then flake into pieces. Do not overcook or it will dry out.

  3. Make the sauce

Mix the Greek yogurt, light mayonnaise, and lemon juice until you have a smooth, creamy, refreshing sauce — a lighter alternative to soured cream.

  4. Assemble

Warm the corn tortillas, then fill each with the flaked fish and avocado slices. Drizzle with the sauce and a squeeze of lime. Warm tortillas are easy to fold.

  5. Serve

Serve the tacos immediately with a fresh coleslaw. Light fish tacos rich in omega-3 and the healthy fats from the avocado.

Blood Sugar Impact

The glycemic index (GI) measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar, while the glycemic load (GL) measures how much a full serving raises it. Together they give the complete picture.

Glycemic Index

GI
47 Low

A low value (≤55) means a gradual rise in blood sugar — the most suitable range for diabetes and insulin resistance.

Glycemic Load

GL
23 High

Glycemic load reflects the impact of the full serving. To lower it: take half a serving, or pair the recipe with a source of protein and fiber.

Troubleshooting

The most common problems when preparing Fish Tacos with Avocado, and how to fix them:

Protein is dry

Heat too high or cooked too long. Grill over medium-high heat for a set time, then rest for a few minutes before flaking to let the juices redistribute.

No grill marks

Pan was not hot enough or the surface was wet. Heat a ridged grill pan well and pat the surface dry; do not move the piece before the marks form.

Flavour is flat

Needs more salt or spice. Season well and taste; add fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon — acidity lifts all the flavours.

Storage and Make-Ahead

Refrigerator (4°C)

2 days in a sealed container once cooled. Reheat thoroughly before serving.

Freezer (-18°C)

1–2 months in individual portions. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

Advance preparation

Prepare and dice the ingredients in advance and keep in the refrigerator — assembly and cooking takes only minutes at serving time.

Reheating

Over low heat with a splash of water, or in a moderate oven until hot. Do not leave cooked food out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours [2].

EEINA Nutrition Tip

White fish is low in fat and high in protein, and corn tortillas are gluten-free. Swapping soured cream for Greek yogurt reduces the fat and raises the protein, while avocado adds healthy fats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this dish suitable for people with diabetes?
Yes — its glycemic index is low and the protein and fibre slow glucose absorption. Keep to a moderate portion, serve with vegetables or a salad, and avoid large amounts of white starches alongside it.
How do I store leftovers?
In a sealed container in the refrigerator for a few days, or in the freezer for later portions (note that seafood dishes have a shorter shelf life). Reheat thoroughly once only.
Can it be adapted for my diet?
Yes — see the substitutions table: you can swap the protein, make it dairy-free or gluten-free, or reduce the salt and fat without losing flavour.
